Quality Improvement of Wedding Images and Recouching Vintage Prints

Wedding Images and Old Print Restoration

I restore old prints and also undertake improvement and retouching of wedding images for customers who have discs.

In one case for example a wedding photographer had to go abroad due to other commitments and gave the couple a disc and the choice of whether or not to wait 6 months for him to produce an album. In another case a couple were married abroad and had a disc they asked me to work on. I charged them for the finishing and retouching work that was badly needed. I then charged them for the prints and a very high quality album at a small profit.

If you have had a professional work for you I advise you in the first instance to go back to your original photographer to negotiate any improvements that you feel are needed. Calm negotiation is usually the most productive way to approach such problems.

If you have had a friend or many friends take photographs for you then it is probably best to call and then to come to me with a disc. If you live at a distance you can post me a disc or memory stick. Please speak to me by phone first before posting anything or coming in person.

As I have no desire to embarrass anyone, I do not show the work of other wedding photographers on this web site. I am also restricted by copyright.

Please note: I do not do restoration work on the prints of currently active professional portrait photographers who would have a legitimate objection to me copying their work. However if they have given you a disc for your own use or you can obtain their written permission to work on prints I am happy do this type of work for you.

If you want restoration of prints carried out I will need to see the print before I can give you a definite quotation. I make a copy of the print, then improve it and produce a new print for you with the defect removed. Where possible I also try for a x2 enlargement if that is what you would like.

Before

After

The example above was rather extreme. You know the expression, 'he's got his father's eyes'.
Well the little boy certainly has now, although they have been rescaled.

BeforeAfter

I can attempt to repair discoloration, surface cracking and ink marks.

If the edge is torn and the background is not complex I will attempt a repair.

Restoration of a very old professional portrait photograph that was stained, cracked and crudely cut. In addition parts of the emulsion layer had detached.

Celebration of a family occasion from amateur photos by the production of a card print

An Irish Family in 1946.
The little girl was a grandmother herself when I restored this photo.

Hand Coloured Dress on a very faded and damaged picture

A small section of the restoration work from a portrait of a second world war soldier is shown. The father of a person from Milngavie. There was damage to the face including one of the eyes that was not easy to repair.

A very badly damaged and darkened Victorian image on a metal plate that had also become distorted. In areas where the emulsion had detached somebody had applied black paint!

This very fine Victorian print was highly unusual. It was printed onto a beveled surface on thick card then hand coloured. The flower detail had been painted in by the original artist. It was in a ornate oval metal frame with beveled glass! The print was extremely difficult to light and photograph since the bevel produced reflections away from the centre. I geometrically corrected the distortion that arose on the digital image by the nature of the curved projection. Although the owner had not noticed, the figure of her grandmother was running off at a slight angle (very excusable in such a fine piece). I also corrected this too. Finally I repaired the damage at the edges which arose due to contact with the metal frame and glass.

Charges

For Vintage Prints done as a one off I charge from £25 for the restoration, a copy of the new digital image and a print.

For either pro or DIY wedding image and print corrections I am happy to provide a package quotation. I only charge £30 per hour for this kind of work.
