Portrait Photographs of Babies and Toddlers taken in the Studio, Milngavie, Glasgow

For me baby and toddler portrait photography is something really special and so I love doing it.

I take great pleasure in trying to record photographically the innocence and happiness of babies and young children.

Some parents bring several changes of clothing when having baby portraits taken. The little girl shown here was also photographed in a long pretty dress that her granny had given her as well as the smart matching red outfit that she is shown wearing above.

Scottish babies are often quite pale in colour so I encourage mums not to wear deep foundation make up. The mum featured here wore a little carefully applied, mascara and lipstick. She was also relaxed and natural which shows in the photograph.

The baby's grandmother, who was herself a children's photographer in younger days, came along and helped keep the baby happy. As you can see the shoot went well despite the fact that the baby was developing a cold.

24 inch large baby print

The 3-image composite print is my favourite way to present baby portrait photos. If you want an extended display 5-image composites are also very good. The 16x12 inch composite print like that shown below is also popular.

Little Boy

I like the happiness expressed by these two little men above.

14x11 inch print of toddler running

Many people have admired the print of the 13 month old baby boy running about under the studio lights. As you can see he thought the photo session was fun. Part of the reason for this was that his parents were a great help to me.

Toddlers of 2 years old often pose well for pictures and very young babies like this 6 week old (above) just decide to do their own thing.

It is a good idea to feed the baby before coming to the studio. Some mums also bring little treats that can be given as rewards to encourage their child to cooperate. If your baby has a regular sleep pattern I am happy to make an appointment that will allow the baby to be fed and have a nap before coming. Please feel free to bring nappies and a changing mat. It is a good idea to bring baby wipes for dirty faces especially if you bring treats.

This little baby boy was really fun to photograph.
A long 5 image composite print of that baby is shown above.

Baby Girl Composite Portrait

This little girl was unsteady on her feet but that really added to the picture.

Mother and baby phtographFather and baby

I encourage mums, dads and grandparents to be photographed with their babies, toddlers, and children. I really like how the mum above has decided to wear clothes that match her son's and wear some discrete makeup. She has also brought one of the babies favourite toys to the studio. Please consider bringing familiar toys, as that can often make a very young child more relaxed while the photography is occurring.

11 month baby girl

The very sweet 11 month old baby girl above arrived in a beautiful knitted jacket that I could not resist photographing her in. Her mum brought several changes of clothing that made an interesting, varied and enjoyable portrait shoot. Click here for more pictures of the shoot.

The baby above was not really standing at 5 months

Charges

I charge a portrait session fee and for prints ordered. However as a parent myself, I understand that babies will sometimes be unwell or just do not like what is going on around them despite the best efforts of their parents. If this is the case and no good pictures can be taken in a baby photo shoot I always offer to waive the session fee.

Baby Photo Sessions

If you have a very young child I will not extend the session beyond the time that the child is comfortable as I do not feel it is fair on them or makes any sense from a photographic point of view. If the parents want to return at a later date to view the pictures in the studio, they are very welcome to do this. Sometimes mums will bring a child during the day then return with their partner in the evening to view the pictures while somebody looks after the children.

From the end of 2009 I will be introducing a new range of PhotoArt and Fine Art Prints
for sizes of 16 inches and over.
